Tesla Roadster is probably what comes to mind when we talk about Electric Hybrids. We’ve hailed the technology for its uniqueness over the past year, but then it may not be the best one around anymore, though the privilege seizure will require a cross segment comparison.

The 2008 GMC Yukon Hybrid is the first SUV to feature the world’s first two-mode hybrid propulsion system. This will offer consumers a 25 percent improvement in overall fuel economy. Expected to arrive at dealerships by the end of next year, the Yukon Hybrid is highly awaited.

Using its pioneering Hybrid technology and Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation technology, the Yukon Hybrid will deliver a stunning combination of fuel efficiency and power. Furthermore, the Hybrid is power-driven by an aluminum small-block Vortec V-8 engine that maintains important performance characteristics of full size trucks, such as towing at 6,000 pounds.

To counterbalance the added weight from the hybrid propulsion system, GM revamped certain vehicle components to optimize aerodynamics. These design changes include a new hood, front and rear fascias, and a sleek GMC grille.

GM has teamed up with Daimler Chrysler and BMW to co-develop the two mode Hybrid system that is a patented fuel saving technology with one mode for city driving and another for highway driving.

The first mode of the system (for city driving) is for low speed and light roads. In this mode the Hybrid system can function with electric power, engine power or the combination of both. When operated as electric only, fuel consumption is decreased in heavy traffic by shutting off the engine, moving wholly under electric power at low speeds.

The second mode is first and foremost used in the highways. In addition to electric assist, the second mode amalgamates stylish electronic controls, such as Active Fuel Management, cam phasing and late-intake valve closure to allow even more efficient engine operation with electric motors less than half the size of a traditional hybrid system. The full eight cylinder engine endows with power in circumstances like passing or towing.

The two mode system influences a four speed automatic transmission and electronic controls in an integrated, powerful and compact system that can be used with gas and diesel engines, front and rear wheel drive configurations.

The GMC Yukon Hybrid will be outfitted with unique powertrain technology that provides a terrific combination of fuel economy, performance and towing capability in a full-size SUV. The Yukon Hybrid’s 25% compound fuel efficiency enhancement emphasizes GM’s promise to save as much fuel as possible by applying Hybrid technologies to the highest fuel consuming vehicles first.

GMC’s array of Professional Grade trucks and SUVs deliver capabilities and unique characteristics to fit vigorous lifestyle. GMC sold more than 566,000 vehicles in 2005, and has set divisional sales records 11 times in the last 13 years. With universal headquarters in Detroit, GM produces its cars and trucks in 33 countries.
