GM is well on target as far as its commitment of developing transportation that reduces oil use and encourages energy miscellany. Automotive experts were spraying notions that the Chevrolet Volt concept, first exhibited at January’s Detroit Auto Show will not make it to production but a second version of the Volt on display at the Shanghai Auto Show put an end to that perception.

Unlike the Volt displayed at the Detroit fest, this one is more avant-garde in terms of the technology it uses to be motorized. The Chevy Volt is equipped with a fully functional hydrogen powertrain. This second iteration of GM’s E-Flex Electric Architecture is powered by GM’s latest hydrogen fuel cell and there is no gasoline motor this time around.

This Chevy Volt uses GM’s fifth generation fuel cell propulsion technology with a lithium-ion battery which enables it travel about 300 miles producing no emissions . It runs on battery power alone and can be charged by hydrogen fuel cell or household electricity gridiron. On a single charge, it can run upto 20 miles thus you can still pelt it without the botheration of visiting a refueling station.
Interestingly the battery pack incorporated in this Volt is half the size of the one that featured in the gasoline powered Volt but it still manages to offer the same performance and range.

Everything said and done I would dub GM foolish if they do not send it to production or atleast put this technology to use. If they do plan to send it, they should work on trimming the production costs for then it would be a sure winner.
