Are you a frequent traveler or tied-down to your hometown? This is a crucial question if one has to understand GM’s hybrid venture that has invariably led to - GM vs. Toyota and Ford!
Toyota’s Single Mode hybrid powertrain is perfect for city driving. However, the only downside is that it uses larger electric motors and hybrid batteries than GM’s Two Mode Hybrid Powertrain, utilized in the yet to be launched 2008 GM Chevy Tahoe hybrid, which on the other hand is perfect for highway driving.
However, solution for Toyota problem is not far - lithium-ion batteries will soon replace the current NiMH batteries so that a lighter, better performing, cheaper, more fuel economical hybrids with greater storage capacity and possibility of plug-ins are created.
The only problem with GM is that even if it changes its batteries it can never be as efficient as Toyota and with the number of car sales increasing it is evident that traffic jams are here to stay - which is not really a good sign for GM.
