Due to the initiation of the Civil Society Institute and 40mpg.org, a new news organization to promote the interest of hybrid car owners came into being yesterday. It has been roughly estimated that there are about 500,000 Americans who are driving hybrid cars and other gas/electric vehicles.
The organization in order keep hybrid owners informed will keep track of all federal, state, local and private sector incentives. HOA is also urging members to fight for five-point hybrid-friendly agenda in the Congress and White House. Such points are:
* Lifting the current cap on the federal tax break for hybrid purchases;
* Creating a new federal tax incentive for those who undertake a plug-in hybrid conversion;
*Promoting a new federal tax break for corporations that provide direct incentives to employees who buy hybrids;
*Rewarding US automakers that undertake more hybrid research and production with assistance in dealing with health care and other high-cost issues; and
*Setting a target of switching over federal vehicle fleet purchases to hybrids of 10% for 2007, 20% for 2008 and 30% for 2009.
