Work is currently underway at EPA, Stanford, and Berkeley to make the already green hybrids greener. The Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) technology is a fusion of compression and spark ignition technology that could make gas-electric hybrids or gas only vehicles to reduce their emissions.
The technology features multiple ignition points so that there is no heat concentration helping to minimise the burn temperature. Lowering of the burn temperature helps reduction of NOx emissions and increase fuel efficiency.
Honda was reported to have been working on the HCCI technology and if used on the new hybrid compact it is working on...then it could very well displace Toyota from the greenest carmaker title it is holding.
