Japan is serious about fighting global warming and gas prices, the Environment Ministry has chalked out a policy, making it mandatory for all new cars to run on flex-fuel — a blend of 10 percent ethanol, and 90 percent gasoline, starting in 2010.
Japan is a top air pollution offender. Currently, it allows only ethanol mixtures of up to 3 percent at the nation’s pumps, which is hardly used by any Japanese. It is to be noted that this 10 percent falls short of the U.S standard — General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler already has 85-percent ethanol blend cars. Therefore, isn’t the figure too low knowing Japan’s history as pollution offender? Will it really help? Japanese love hybrids - why not opt for this one instead? It is doing well while only few ethanol cars are available in Japan.
