To commemorate Norway’s first Hydrogen Pump, Mazda will display from August 22nd, the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE at an energy exhibition and conference to be held in Stavanger, Norway. The carmaker has already leased out several of such cars to companies in Japan.
The car runs on both hydrogen and petrol, which can be turned on with the flick of a switch. It is also the first time that the car would be seen outside Japan.
Mr. Brage W. Johansen, Manager of Hydrogen Group, Statoil ASA and member of the HyNor National Board shares:
The hydrogen station in Stavanger is the first step of a long and exciting journey for hydrogen, and we are very proud to have Mazda present at the opening. Hydrogen has always suffered from the classic chicken-and-egg debate: the car manufacturers wait for a fuel distribution network to be set up, and the fuel suppliers wait for cars to be produced. In the end we decided to take a risk and build the first station and as you can see, the first cars have already arrived.
To realize the setting up of this station, more than 30 Norwegian partners from authorities, industry and commerce and the academic community have joined hands. Manned by HyNor Project, it is the first of the several stations planned and the next one would be opened in Greenland. Their initial goal is to ply hydrogen-powered vehicle between the cities of Stavanger and Oslo.

Will this save more fuel? Personally, I wouldn’t go for hybrid cars (autopartswarehouse.com even though more and more automakers are into making hybrid cars.
