With a ghastly pollution level in India, the automakers are rightly concerned. As an option to gasoline, Diesel cars have been doing really well in the country. Now big auto giants, GM and Hindustan Motors is making plans to introduce CNG as a fuel option.

What these two companies have in mind is the launch of a CNG variant of the Optra and Lancer. These models would be introduced first in Mumbai, Delhi and Gujarat where CNG is commonly used. Few years back, Delhi had mandated the use of only CNG in all of its public transpors.

Mr Ankush Arora, Vice-President, Marketing, GM India, told newspapers:

We opted for CNG primarily for its lower pricing and availability in the targeted areas. As of date, Mumbai has 120 CNG stations that is already supplying gas to public transport vehicles, while Delhi has 146 stations. Moreover, at Rs 22.06 per kg it is the cheapest fuel available in the targeted areas.

These companies will not only in the three cities - depending upon the availability of CNGs it will also introduce such models in other Indian cites too. This time, these companies will also be offering warranty on those models fitted with a CNG kit.
