Even the hybrid champions, Toyota have finalized plans to produce PHEV, so I strongly believe all that it is time all Prius owners move over to PHEV too. To get you started there are two kits that will be available soon– the $12,000 EDrive kit from Pete Nortman which will debut by December and the $12,500 Hymotion kit due later this year, from Ricardo Bazzarella.
If you are not familiar with hybrids then this is what the kit can do. For Nortman who replaced his Prius battery with a lithium-ion version and plug-in system now gets about 100 miles per gallon–roughly twice what a regular Prius gets at best. Cool is it not?
These hybrid hackers received assistance from nonprofits like Palo Alto-based California Cars Initiative. The group’s founder, Felix Kramer states:
The goal is to make carmakers build these cars.
