It is finally here, the much hyped, much awaited and anticipated electric vehicle, Tesla Roadster which is overwhelmingly better than any other EV produced so far. I say it is better because it is more generous in terms of miles it can go on a single charge-doing away with an average 90 or 60 miles on a charge the car surpasses these record exceedingly well with its own 250 miles on a single charge rate.
Martin Eberhard, founder and CEO of Tesla Motors says:
It didn’t make sense to sell a car that couldn’t go 90 miles on a charge. You’d spend more time charging the old EVs than driving them. Lithium-ion technology, which has been proven in many different applications, has allowed us to achieve exactly what we thought it would in terms of power, range and efficiency. The Tesla Roadster delivers sports car performance without using any gasoline. This is what we hoped to achieve when we started the company three years ago, to build a car with zero emissions that people would love to drive.
Yes, to forego gasoline, the Tesla Roadster comes with Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE), to enable charging at home which takes roughly around 3.5 hours. Besides, needing no justification for slow speed like other EVs, this one can accelerate 60 mph in just four seconds (equivalent mileage of 135 mph) and a 250 mile range and a top speed of 130 mph. With this, the car is in league with Ferrari F430, Porsche Carrera S, and the BMW M5. So where does the car get its power from? First, it is from the high-tech lithium-ion Energy Storage System; 3-phase, 4-pole AC induction motor along with the Power Electronics Module (PEM). Besides that come 6,831 lithium-ion cells; a network of microprocessors to maintain charge balance and temperature among the batteries; a cooling system; and an independent safety system to disconnect power outside the enclosure for safety.
Another quality that is so striking in the Tesla Roadster is its looks-chic, smooth and sexy unlike other EVs. The beauty of the car can be attributed to the effort of the company’s employees, headed by Barney Hatt, Principal Designer at the Lotus Design Studio in England.
Tesla Roadster’s initial deliveries will begin in the United States next summer. However, I assume the price would be in titanic proportions. Nevertheless, for those who can afford to get one, I can assure you that it is safe. It has excelled in meeting the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) standards. Safe, fast and clean...what more do you need in a car?
