General Motors is tagging up with A 123 System Inc., one of the worlds leading suppliers of lithium ion battery, to develop cells with A123 system’s nanophosphate batteries for a long lasting, safe and powerful Lithium-ion cells for GMs electric drive E-Flex system.
The venture is expected to speed-up the development of the plug in hybrids and other alternative fuel solutions and is one of the latest efforts from GM directed towards developing alternative technologies which will drive transport away from petroleum.
The E-Flex electric vehicle architect was first seen in Chevy Volt concept car earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show. Chevy volt does not use any gasoline and has a zero emission level.
In an appearance at the auto industries annual management briefing seminar, General Motors Corp. Vice Chairman Bob Lutz informed that the company expects to have the battery packs ready by this fall. It is likely that the vehicles will be ready for testing this spring.
