Just when we are still dealing with the aftermath of Ford’s announcement, good news comes to rescue us. Volvo, a Ford subsidiary since 1999, is going to make amends for Ford’s broken promise by investing 10 billion kronor to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions of its fleet.
Though Ford decided not to take up hybrids on its own, yet according to its announcement from Volvo Car headquarters in Gothenburg, it has no problem in investing in environmentally friendlier cars by creating a hybrid development center in the city.
Fredrik Arp, Volvo Car’s CEO is thrilled:
We are very pleased that Ford Motor Company has decided to establish a development-centre for hybrid technology in Gothenburg. This shows a strong belief in Volvo Cars and our ability to deliver results in future advanced technologies and underline the fact that Sweden has all the pre-requisites for research and development excellence.
The centre will have engineers from both sides that will focus on producing not only hybrids but greater fuel-efficient diesel cars; smaller cleaner and lighter vehicles, and alternative fuels.
